Zachariah Burton, an 18-year-old artist from Kent, is experiencing a dream come true as his painting is displayed at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. For Zachariah, having his work shown at such a famous place feels like winning the lottery. His painting, called Maggie's Den, is a picture of an old, unused bingo hall in his hometown of Chatham. The painting is part of the Royal Academy's Young Artists' Summer Show, which is open at Burlington House in London until the end of August. Zachariah's artwork is a study of urban decay, showing how many places on the high street are empty and full of wasted potential. He explained that he wanted to paint what he knows, just like writers are told to write about their own experiences.
The Young Artists' Summer Show is now in its eighth year and is a chance for young people aged four to eighteen to show their creative talents. This year, more than 25,000 students entered their work, and visitors to the exhibition can vote for their favorite piece. Zachariah applied to be part of the show about six months ago and was shocked when he received an email saying his painting had been chosen. He has loved art since he was a child, but he never expected to be picked for the actual exhibition. Zachariah said it felt like winning the lottery because so many people applied. His painting of the bingo hall was made using acrylic paints. He named it Maggie's Den, which is a reference to the traditional bingo call for the number 10, and also a nod to Margaret Thatcher, who lived at 10 Downing Street when she was Prime Minister.
Growing up in Chatham, Zachariah saw the town change over the years. He described it as a bit of a ghost town now, and the empty bingo hall seemed to represent that feeling. He said that in the past, many working people would have gone to the bingo hall on weekends, but now it is just an empty space. Zachariah is planning to attend the Medway School of Art in September to continue his studies. He believes that more artists should try to paint the real world around them, not just beautiful things like sunsets. He mentioned that there is also an abandoned pound shop on Chatham High Street, which is covered in graffiti and has half its sign missing. Zachariah would like to paint that next, to show what his town really looks like.
The Royal Academy's Young Artists' Summer Show is a great opportunity for young artists to share their work with the public. People can visit the exhibition, see all the different paintings, and vote for their favorite. Zachariah is proud to be part of the show and hopes his art will make people think about how towns change and how empty spaces could be used for something new. He wants to keep painting and hopes to inspire other young people to express themselves through art. Zachariah's story shows that with hard work and passion, young artists can achieve amazing things and have their voices heard.
