A remarkable guitar that once belonged to Noel Gallagher, a member of the iconic band Oasis, has recently been sold at auction for an impressive sum of over £130,000. This particular guitar, known as an Epiphone Les Paul standard electric guitar, gained fame for its appearance in the music video for Oasis's debut single 'Supersonic'. It holds a significant place in the band's history as it was played by Gallagher during the crucial period leading up to the recording of their first album, 'Definitely Maybe'. The guitar was not only used in the studio but also featured prominently in several of the band's early live performances at venues such as the Boardwalk in Manchester, Gleneagles in Scotland, and Water Rats in London. The auction took place at Sotheby's, where the guitar was initially estimated to sell for between £60,000 and £80,000. However, the final sale price exceeded all expectations, reaching a staggering £132,000. This auction comes on the heels of the Gallagher brothers' recent announcement regarding a potential reunion, following their well-publicized split in 2009. Fans were thrilled when tickets for Oasis's upcoming concerts went on sale at the end of August, with a massive demand for them. The guitar, which features a stunning sunburst design, was carefully held by a Sotheby's staff member during the auction. Before the final recording of 'Definitely Maybe' in 1994, Gallagher had used this guitar in various recording sessions at Out Of The Blue Studios in Manchester and Monnow Valley Studios in Wales. It also appeared on the cover artwork for their debut single and was one of four guitars that Gallagher sold during Sotheby’s inaugural popular culture auction. Two additional guitars that Gallagher had used also fetched impressive prices. One was an Epiphone EA-250 electric guitar, which sold for £48,000, far exceeding its estimated value of £20,000 to £30,000. Another guitar, a 1980 Gibson Flying V that was previously owned by The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and used by Gallagher in the recording of Oasis’s 1994 hit 'Cigarettes and Alcohol', sold for £36,000. Katherine Schofield, the head of popular culture at Sotheby’s, expressed her excitement, stating, 'It’s a fitting tribute to celebrate not only the 30th Anniversary of 'Definitely Maybe' but also the recent announcement of the long-awaited Oasis reunion. ' She added that it was 'thrilling to see such strong and competitive bidding for these culturally significant guitars, previously used by Noel Gallagher.
