At the Sellafield nuclear power plant in Cumbria, a new four-legged robot is being tested to help monitor radiation levels in areas that could be dangerous for humans. This robot, which is yellow and black, was designed by Boston Dynamics and is called Spot. It has a large arm at the front that can hold a swabbing tool, allowing it to clean and check surfaces for radioactive material. The main goal of using this robot is to keep workers safe by letting the robot go into hazardous places instead of people.
Deon Bulman, who leads the remotely operated vehicle equipment team at Sellafield, explained that the robot is very agile and can move into spaces that would be risky for humans. The robot is controlled remotely, and the feedback it gives allows operators to guide it very precisely. This means that the robot can do its job quickly and safely, which helps make the process of cleaning up and shutting down old nuclear sites faster and less expensive. The robot's arm can copy the way a human would swab a surface, which is important because the health physics team at Sellafield does hundreds of these swabs every day to make sure the plant is safe.
The trial used the Spot robot, which was developed by Boston Dynamics and the Robotics & AI Collaboration, or RAICo. RAICo also created special software that lets the robot's arm move just like a human hand when swabbing. During the test, the robot was sent into a restricted area to check a fake radiation spill and swab a surface that was made to look contaminated. Dr. Kirsty Hewitson, the director of RAICo, said that this trial followed a similar successful test at the Joint European Torus facility in Oxfordshire, which works with fusion technology. She believes that robots like Spot could help not only with nuclear decommissioning but also at other engineering sites where safety is important. The hope is that in the future, robots will be used even more to keep workers safe and make dangerous jobs easier.
