Nicki Guy, a 47-year-old woman from the UK, faced a life-changing challenge when she developed a rare eye condition called hypotony. This condition causes the pressure inside the eye to drop dangerously low, which can make the eyeball collapse and lead to blindness. Nicki’s vision became so poor that she could only count fingers and everything around her was blurry. She had to use a magnifying glass to read and relied on her memory to move around her home. The thought of not being able to see her child grow up was heartbreaking for her.
Doctors at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, which is the first clinic in the world dedicated to treating hypotony, decided to try a new approach. Traditionally, doctors have used treatments like steroids and silicone oil to help people with this condition, but these methods often do not restore much vision and can even be harmful over time. The team at Moorfields, led by Mr. Harry Petrushkin, decided to use a clear, water-based gel called hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, or HPCM. This gel is already used in some eye surgeries, but the doctors thought it might work better if injected directly into the main part of the eye.
Nicki was the first patient to receive this new treatment. The doctors injected the clear gel into her eye every three to four weeks for about ten months. The gel helped restore the shape and pressure of her eye, allowing her retina to capture light signals more clearly. As a result, Nicki’s vision improved dramatically. She can now read most lines on an eye test chart and is only one line away from the legal requirement for driving. Although she may never drive again, she is thrilled with the improvement and says the treatment has given her life back.
The results of this new therapy have been very promising. Out of the first eight patients treated, seven have responded well. The doctors have now treated 35 patients in total, thanks to funding from the Moorfields Eye Charity, and they hope to help many more people in the future. The treatment is still new, and the doctors are working to figure out which patients will benefit the most. Nicki’s story shows how determination and innovative thinking can lead to breakthroughs in medicine, giving hope to people who thought they might lose their sight forever.
