Swatch, the well-known Swiss watchmaker, recently launched a new limited edition watch that caused a huge stir across the UK and around the world. The new watch, called the Royal Pop pocket watch, was made in partnership with another famous watch company, Audemars Piguet. The excitement was so great that hundreds of people lined up outside Swatch stores in cities like Liverpool, London, Manchester, and Cardiff, hoping to get their hands on one of these special watches. The lines were so long that they stretched down the streets, with people waiting for hours before the stores even opened.
The Royal Pop pocket watch comes in eight different models, with prices starting at £335. However, because the watch is so limited and popular, some people who managed to buy one started selling them online for as much as £16,000. This made even more people want to rush to the stores, hoping to buy a watch and maybe sell it for a big profit. Swatch became worried about the safety of both their customers and their staff because of the large crowds. As a result, they decided to close their stores in several major cities, including London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool, Manchester, and Sheffield.
In Cardiff, the situation became tense when about 300 people tried to enter the St. Davids shopping center early in the morning. The police were called, and a 25-year-old man was arrested and told not to return to the city center for the rest of the day. In Liverpool, police responded to reports of a group of men acting aggressively and making threats outside the Swatch store. The crowd left after the police arrived. Swatch posted a message online asking people not to rush to their stores and explained that the Royal Pop Collection would be available for several months. They also said that in some places, if more than 50 people were in line, sales might have to be paused for safety reasons.
The excitement was not just in the UK. In Tokyo, fans waited outside the Swatch store for days, and in New York, some watch lovers camped outside for a whole week, with reports that some people became unwell from waiting so long. Swatch even canceled a launch event in Dubai because too many people showed up. At Swatch's headquarters in Biel, Switzerland, people also lined up outside, hoping to buy the new watch.
Swatch says the Royal Pop watches were inspired by the Pop Art movement of the 1950s and 60s. The watches are colorful and bold, combining the unique design of Audemars Piguet's Royal Oak with Swatch's playful POP watches from the 1980s. Swatch describes the collection as a mix of joyful boldness and positive provocation. The company hopes that by keeping the watches available for several months, everyone who wants one will have a chance to buy it without any problems or safety concerns. Swatch also reminded fans to stay safe and not to rush to the stores, as there will be enough watches for everyone.
