Ultraviolet radiation, or UV, is a type of energy that comes from the Sun and reaches the Earth. While we cannot see UV rays, they have a big impact on our health. Some UV exposure is good for us because it helps our bodies make vitamin D, which is important for strong bones, healthy blood, and a good immune system. However, too much UV can be dangerous. It can damage the DNA in our skin cells, which can lead to skin cancer. UV rays also make our skin age faster, causing wrinkles and loose skin, and can even harm our eyes, leading to problems like cataracts.
During sunny periods, like the recent May heatwave in the UK, UV levels can be much higher than usual. The UV Index is a scale that measures how strong the UV rays are. It starts at zero and can go above ten. The higher the number, the more dangerous the UV rays are for our skin and eyes. According to the World Health Organization, if the UV Index is low (1-2), you do not need sun protection. If it is medium (3-5) or high (6-7), you should use sunscreen and wear protective clothing. If it is very high (8-10) or extremely high (11+), you need extra protection and should try to stay out of the sun as much as possible. In the UK, the UV Index is usually around 5 or 6 in the summer, but it can be higher in countries closer to the equator, like Kenya or Spain.
To protect yourself from UV radiation, you should use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and make sure it has good UVA protection. Apply it to all exposed skin, including your face, neck, ears, and head if you have little or no hair. Put it on about 30 minutes before you go outside and reapply every two hours, or more often if you sweat, swim, or dry off with a towel. You should also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes, cover up with hats and long sleeves, and stay in the shade when the sun is strongest, usually between 11 am and 3 pm. Children are more sensitive to UV, so they need even more protection.
Some people believe that getting a tan is healthy, but experts say there is no safe way to tan from the sun. Tanning is your skin's way of trying to protect itself, but it does not give you much protection at all. If you want a tanned look, it is safer to use self-tanning products. Remember, you can still get sunburned on cloudy or windy days because UV rays can go through clouds. The temperature does not affect how much UV reaches your skin, so always check the UV Index before going outside. People with darker skin can still be harmed by UV rays and can get skin cancer, so everyone needs to be careful. Too much UV can also damage your eyes and weaken your immune system, no matter your skin color.
As heatwaves become more common, it is important to understand how to stay safe in the sun. By using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and being aware of the UV Index, you can enjoy the outdoors while protecting your skin and eyes from harm.
