Bhojpuri is spoken by millions of people in northern India and by communities around the world. It has a long history of folk songs, poetry, and theater. However, many people today think of Bhojpuri as a language used only for songs with silly jokes or inappropriate content. In movies and TV shows, characters who speak Bhojpuri are often shown as comic relief or outsiders. This stereotype has made it hard for the true beauty of Bhojpuri culture to be seen. Utpal and other artists are working hard to change this image. Utpal grew up listening to folk music and learning about famous Bhojpuri poets like Bhikhari Thakur and Mahendra Misir.
