The Dalby Mountain Nature Reserve, located on the Isle of Man, has recently expanded to include a new area of moorland that is recognized for its exceptional ecological importance. This expansion adds 43 acres to the reserve, which is a significant increase of 62%. The Manx Wildlife Trust, the organization responsible for managing the reserve, acquired this additional land with funds from a corporate donation. With this new addition, the Dalby Mountain Nature Reserve now covers a total of 112 acres, making it the second largest nature reserve on the Isle of Man. The trust emphasizes that this new moorland is not only vital for nature conservation but also serves as an important habitat for hen harriers, a bird species known for its unique hunting style. The trust has described the newly acquired land as an area of 'exceptional ecological importance and landscape character,' showcasing a prime example of blanket bog, which is a type of wetland that plays a crucial role in the ecosystem. The Dalby Mountain Nature Reserve is already unique because it is the only upland reserve managed by the Manx Wildlife Trust. The newly added area is also classified as heathland and is adjacent to the Glen Rushen Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI). The trust has plans to seek official recognition for this new land as both an ASSI and a Ramsar Wetland, which would further highlight its significance for wildlife and conservation efforts. David Bellamy, the head of conservation and land for the trust, expressed gratitude for the donation from Resilience Asset Management, stating that it allows them to ensure the entire ecological unit is under their care indefinitely. He noted that the site supports a variety of key species, including bog asphodel, sphagnum mosses, grasshopper warbler, short-eared owl, and jack snipe, and that it requires minimal management. Bellamy believes that this acquisition will help raise awareness about the importance of the Isle of Man's precious peatlands and the need to protect them for future generations. The expansion of the Dalby Mountain Nature Reserve is a significant step towards enhancing the conservation of the unique ecosystems found on the Isle of Man. With the addition of the new moorland, the reserve will continue to provide a safe haven for various plant and animal species, while also serving as an educational resource for the community.
