A new project in Wales is set to use drones to deliver blood donations, aiming to save lives by speeding up the process of getting blood to where it is needed most. Currently, blood donations are processed in south Wales and then transported by road, which can take several hours, especially to remote areas. The Dragon's Heart project plans to use specially designed drones that weigh about 55 pounds and are 5. 5 feet wide to fly blood samples directly to accident scenes or hospitals. The trial is expected to begin in early 2026 and is being called both significant and exciting by the Welsh Blood Service.
These drones have a hatch on top where the blood is placed, which helps keep the blood at the right temperature and reduces shaking during the flight. The drones will fly at heights of up to 2,000 feet, and the blood will be tested after each flight to make sure it is still safe to use. Peter Richardson, who is in charge of quality and safety at the Welsh Blood Service, said they are committed to making sure the blood is safe and that none of the valuable donations are wasted.
Skyports Drone Services, a company based in Buckinghamshire, is providing the drones and has experience operating them around the world. Their CEO, Alex Brown, explained that the drones are unique because they can take off like a helicopter and then fly like a plane. They can land in small spaces, travel up to 62 miles, and handle strong winds. The company still needs to prove to the Civil Aviation Authority that the drones are safe for these missions. The testing will take place at the Snowdonia Aerospace Centre, which has a lot of airspace and is safe for drone flights. If the trial is successful, the next step will be to use drones to carry blood between the Welsh Blood Service headquarters in Talbot Green and the blood store in Wrexham, which could cut travel time by about three hours. Eventually, the project could connect blood stores with hospitals and even help ambulance services respond to emergencies faster. The Welsh Blood Service believes that using drones will allow them to deliver blood more often and respond more quickly to patients across Wales.
