The new facility, which is being developed by Veri Energy, will focus on producing hydrogen and e-methanol. These are types of clean fuels that create much less air pollution and greenhouse gases compared to traditional fuels like petrol and diesel. Many people in Shetland work in oil and gas, and as those industries slow down, there is a risk that jobs could be lost.

Veri Energy wants to keep these skilled workers employed by retraining them to work with clean fuels. The Scottish government’s investment of seven hundred fifty-five thousand seven hundred twenty pounds is part of the third phase of the project. A government spokesperson said this money will help make sure that workers in Shetland have a strong future. Gavin Templeton, the chief executive of Veri Energy, believes the hub could transform Sullom Voe into a leading site for e-fuels. He said the project will build on the region’s long history and experience in the energy industry.

The government also hopes that the clean fuels hub will be able to supply e-methanol to a planned sustainable aviation fuel plant in Grangemouth. This means that the clean fuels made in Shetland could help power airplanes in a more environmentally friendly way. Energy minister Stephen Gethins said that investing in green energy will bring new economic opportunities to Scotland. He explained that the country needs to manage its oil and gas resources carefully, while also taking advantage of new technologies and cleaner fuel sources. The clean fuels hub is expected to be up and running by two thousand thirty, marking a big step forward for Shetland and Scotland in the move towards a greener future.
