Recently, David Ellison, the chief executive of Paramount Skydance, spoke publicly for the first time about his company's plan to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery in a massive $110 billion deal. This merger has sparked a lot of debate, with some people worried that combining these two media giants could give them too much power and influence over what people watch and how news is reported. In an opinion piece published in The New York Times, Ellison defended the merger, saying that the concerns are based on an outdated view of Hollywood. He argued that the media landscape has changed, and the new company would not dominate the market as some fear.

Ellison addressed specific worries about the future of CBS and CNN, which are major news outlets owned by Paramount and Warner Bros. He promised that these channels would remain fair and balanced, continuing to report news without taking sides. He emphasized that the merged company would not threaten newsroom independence or push a particular agenda. To address antitrust concerns, Ellison pointed out that even after the merger, Paramount-Warner would account for less than 20 percent of US television watch time. When YouTube is included, this share drops to about 13 percent. He also noted that the new company would still be competing with tech giants like Netflix, Amazon, and Apple, which have much larger resources.

Ellison highlighted the company's commitment to expanding traditional production, promising to release 30 theatrical films and 170 television series each year. He said they would invest more than $30 billion annually in new content, which is important for supporting creative workers in the industry. He argued that increasing content investment is necessary to help creative professionals compete against technology platforms that use algorithms to drive engagement. Despite his optimism, Ellison admitted that no one can predict what audiences will love. The merger faces legal challenges, with groups like the Writers Guild of America filing lawsuits to stop it, claiming it would reduce competition and harm writers' opportunities. The US Department of Justice and international regulators are reviewing the deal, but legal proceedings in the US are currently on hold, with the trial scheduled for March 2027. The outcome of the merger remains uncertain as the companies continue to work toward closing the deal.
