The states also want to end disappearing posts, like Instagram Stories, which are popular among young users. Meta has denied all the claims, saying that it has always worked to support young users and keep them safe. A company spokesperson said that Meta disagrees with the states and believes the evidence will show that they care about young people’s well-being. However, Meta has already lost a similar case in New Mexico, where a judge ordered the company to make changes like removing like counts for users under 18 and limiting notifications. The judge even called Meta a ‘public nuisance,’ comparing it to a factory that pollutes the air. If the 30 states win their case, Meta might have to make these changes across the whole country, which would affect nearly two-thirds of the US population.

The debate over social media’s impact on young people is not new. Many studies have shown that features like like counts and endless notifications can make teenagers feel worse about themselves. For example, some kids create many accounts just to like their own posts and feel more popular.
