The West of England has experienced a summer with record-breaking heatwaves and very little rain. These extreme weather events have caused rivers and reservoirs to shrink, and some lakes have dried up. The hot and dry conditions have made life difficult for both people and wildlife. Travel was disrupted, schools had to close, and wildfires broke out in some areas. Even though temperatures are starting to drop as summer ends, experts say the effects on the land and animals will last much longer.

Stuart McCarthy-Thompson from the Avon Wildlife Trust explained that the heatwaves have been very damaging to nature. He said, 'Plants are dried out, the grassland is almost gone, and there has been a lot of soil erosion. ' Many trees are stressed, losing their leaves and fruit earlier than usual. The lack of rain has caused grass to turn brown and dry, and important food sources like blackberries and seeds have ripened too early. These foods are usually available for wildlife in autumn and winter, but now there may not be enough to last through the colder months.

The drought has made the soil hard, so animals like earthworms have to dig deeper to find moisture. This makes it harder for birds to catch them. Insects are also affected by the heat, and they may appear at different times than usual. Birds often time their egg hatching to match when insects are available, but if these events do not happen together, there may not be enough food for baby birds. Some birds might not even nest if they cannot find enough food.

Last winter was very wet, with rainfall much higher than normal. Some people hope that the extra rain will help the land recover, but it may not be enough. Oli Henman from Bath and North East Somerset Council said that rain can help, but if the dry weather lasts too long and too many people walk on the grass, the roots can be damaged. The council is looking at ways to make parks and open spaces stronger, such as planting more trees for shade and managing water resources better.

McCarthy-Thompson agreed that more needs to be done to help nature recover. He said that water runs off the land too quickly, and work is needed to restore habitats and let rivers flow more naturally. Nicholas Wray from the University of Bristol Botanic Garden said that the hot weather has lowered groundwater levels, shrunk rivers, and reduced the amount of water in reservoirs. These changes affect wildlife and could even impact our water supply in the future.

Trees, especially new ones, have struggled to survive the heat. They can also become more vulnerable to pests and diseases during heatwaves, which can cause branches to die. Sometimes, the damage to large trees does not show up until a year or two later.

Animals are also struggling. Birds, insects, and other wildlife need water to survive. Many birds and animals depend on fish, insects, and other small creatures for food, but these are harder to find when water is scarce. Bumblebees, which are important for pollinating plants, are having trouble because they get too hot. If these hot, dry summers continue, there could be fewer bumblebees in the future.

Farm animals like cows and sheep are also affected by the heat. They do not grow as quickly and produce less milk when it is hot. Wray said that the climate is getting warmer, and weather patterns are becoming less predictable. He warned that even if next summer is very wet, we should not forget about the problems caused by droughts. It is important to keep working on ways to help nature, farms, and cities cope with extreme heat in the future.
