France is taking steps to suspend the online platform of Shein, a major Asian e-commerce company, after concerns were raised about certain products found on its website. The announcement came just over an hour after Shein opened its first physical store in Paris, located on the sixth floor of the BHV department store. While many shoppers were eager to visit the new store, the opening was met with protests both inside and outside the building. Protesters held signs and shouted 'Shame! ' at those entering, expressing their anger over Shein's presence in the prestigious department store.

The French government, under the prime minister's order, has asked Shein to prove that all its online content complies with French laws and regulations. This move follows an investigation by France's anti-fraud office, which discovered the sale of inappropriate products on Shein's website. The Paris prosecutor's office is also investigating three other e-commerce platforms: Temu, AliExpress, and Wish. The controversy has led some rival clothing brands to announce their departure from BHV in protest against Shein's arrival. Inside the store, protests continued, with one individual releasing a foul-smelling spray to show their disapproval.

Shein is well-known for its affordable and fashionable clothing, but it has faced criticism over environmental concerns and working conditions. Fashion designer Agnès B stated she would close her concession in BHV when her contract ends, citing opposition to fast fashion. Shein has promised to cooperate fully with authorities and provide information about sellers and products involved in the investigation. AliExpress and Temu have also responded, with AliExpress removing the problematic listings and Temu working with French authorities to strengthen protections for minors. The director of BHV, Frédéric Merlin, considered ending the partnership with Shein but was convinced to continue after Shein's assurances. The Paris prosecutor's office is now investigating Shein and the other platforms for content that could be harmful to minors, and Shein has announced stricter controls and permanent bans for sellers involved in illegal activities. The French consumer watchdog has stated that the description and categorization of the problematic products left little doubt about their nature, prompting further action to protect consumers and children.
