China is known as the world’s largest producer of cabbages, with millions of tonnes grown every year and many exported to countries like Vietnam, South Korea, and Russia. Recently, a serious issue has come to light in the country. Authorities in Hebei province, located in north-eastern China, have started an investigation after a video surfaced online. The video, shared by an environmental blogger, showed people dipping cabbages into a chemical solution before loading them onto trucks. This chemical was identified as formaldehyde, a substance that is strictly banned for use on food in China because it can be dangerous to human health.
Formaldehyde is a colorless chemical often used to preserve biological specimens, but it is not safe for people to eat. The American Cancer Society has linked high exposure to formaldehyde in some workplaces to certain types of cancer, although the effects of small amounts are less clear. After confirming the video’s authenticity, local officials in Hebei took legal action against those involved. The government is now working quickly to prevent public panic and restore trust in the food supply. They are conducting spot checks at markets across the country to make sure no more cabbages have been treated with formaldehyde.
In response to the incident, the Xinfadi market in Beijing, which is one of the largest fresh produce markets in the capital, released a statement. They said they had checked their cabbages and found that none of the affected vegetables had entered their market. Local authorities in Kangbao county also promised to strictly punish anyone found breaking the law. The story has received a lot of attention in Chinese media. An editorial in the People’s Daily criticized the wholesalers, saying they cared only about making money and ignored the health and safety of consumers.
China produces over 30 million tonnes of cabbages each year, which is nearly half of the world’s total. The government is now trying to find out how common this illegal practice is and to trace any vegetables that might have been affected. Officials have promised to deal with any illegal or unsafe practices according to the law, to make sure the vegetable supply is safe. This incident has made many people in China worry about food safety, but the government is taking steps to make sure it does not happen again.
