The concept of parasocial relationships dates back to 1956, when sociologists Donald Horton and Richard Wohl noticed that television viewers often felt close to on-screen personalities. These viewers treated TV hosts and actors almost like family or friends, even though the connection was entirely one-sided. Colin McIntosh, the chief editor of the Cambridge Dictionary, explained that 'parasocial' was originally an academic term but has recently become popular in everyday language, thanks in part to social media. The dictionary provided several examples of parasocial relationships, including fans who are fascinated by the love lives of stars like Dua Lipa, and the rise of parasocial connections with AI bots. Podcast hosts, who often share personal stories, can also become substitutes for real friends, deepening listeners' parasocial feelings. The word saw a spike in searches after YouTube star IShowSpeed referred to an obsessive fan as his 'number 1 parasocial. ' Senior editor Jessica Rundell noted that parasocial relationships go beyond simple fandom; they involve a belief that the celebrity knows the fan as well. The Cambridge Dictionary adds new words when they become widely used and stand the test of time, and 'parasocial' is now recognized as an important part of how people relate to public figures in the digital age.
