Bethany Williams is an artist from the Isle of Man who recently shared her story about recovering from a chronic illness through her art. In 2013, Bethany was diagnosed with a condition called new daily persistent headache, which caused her severe pain in her head and face. Although she went into remission for a while, her symptoms returned in 2022 and were even worse, leaving her unable to get out of bed for a year and a half. During this difficult time, Bethany found that creating art helped her reconnect with herself and slowly recover. She created an exhibition called 'This Wild, Achingly, Beautiful Place,' which is currently on display in London. The exhibition is inspired by her journey to recovery and the landscapes of the Isle of Man, where she spent much of her time healing.
Bethany described her exhibition as a love letter to the land that supported her, the pain that changed her, and the new version of herself she discovered. She said that after winning a major fashion award, she moved back to the Isle of Man from London to focus on her health. There, she found the time and space to reconnect with her creative process. She explored new artistic techniques, such as ceramics, and spent time in nature, which she said helped her feel more like herself again. The exhibition features four gold-colored abstract sculptures that are lit from below, as well as textile light sculptures, porcelain pieces, paintings, a fabric installation, and a wooden screen. Each piece represents a different stage of her recovery.
Bethany explained that she was very sensitive to light during her illness, so she used light in her sculptures as a symbol of her progress. The exhibition room is dark, with colorful lights and arching panels that create a unique atmosphere. She was inspired by the natural beauty of the Isle of Man, including the standing stones, highlands, and wind-shaped trees. She wanted her art to capture the feeling of losing yourself and slowly finding your way back. Bethany said that while her recovery was painful, it also taught her valuable life lessons. The exhibition will be on display at Bethlem Gallery in London until the end of January and will later be shown at the House of Manannan in 2027. Bethany hopes her story and art will inspire others who are facing their own challenges.
