Researchers at the University of Sheffield have discovered something fascinating about how insects like house flies and fruit flies process information. Their study shows that these insects use a special technique called high-frequency jumping, which allows them to react to their surroundings with incredible speed and accuracy. This discovery could help improve artificial intelligence systems, such as those used in self-driving cars and robots, by making them faster and more efficient.

The scientists found that flies do not just passively watch the world. Instead, they make tiny, quick movements with their bodies and eyes, called saccades. These movements help their brains collect clearer and faster information about what is happening around them. When a fly makes a sharp turn, its brain shifts into a higher gear, allowing it to focus on the most important and fast-moving details. This helps the insect avoid dangers and fly at high speeds, even though its brain is very small.

Professor Mikko Juusola, who led the research, explained that this way of processing information is very different from how computers usually work. Most computers process information in a fixed way, with built-in delays. But the flies' brains use movement and vision together to make decisions quickly. Dr Jouni Takalo, another scientist on the team, said that this new understanding could change how we design AI systems. By copying the way insects use movement to help their brains, future robots and self-driving cars could become smarter, faster, and use less energy. This research shows that even the smallest creatures can teach us big lessons about technology and problem-solving.
