Mark Lowery is an author who grew up in Preston, Lancashire, and now lives in Kesgrave, Suffolk. He wrote a book called Charlie and Me, which tells the story of two brothers who go on a special journey together. The book is full of challenges, surprises, and emotional moments as the brothers travel and learn about themselves and each other. In 2018, the book was published and received a lot of praise. Later, a film company decided to turn Charlie and Me into a movie. The film is called 500 Miles and features well-known actors such as Bill Nighy, Maisie Williams, Roman Griffin Davis, Dexter Sol Ansell, Clare Dunne, and Michael Socha. The movie will be released in the UK on June 26. Mark was invited to visit the set during filming in Ireland, which was a dream come true for him. He got to see the actors and crew working together to bring his story to life. Mark said that some of his other books almost became films before, but this was the first time one of his stories made it all the way to the big screen.

The process of making the film took several years, partly because of delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Filming finally began in 2024, with BAFTA-winning director Morgan Matthews leading the project. Mark said he got along very well with Morgan and felt that the film team really understood what was important about his book. He told them he was not too worried about small changes, but he wanted them to keep the spirit of the story. Mark believes that both the book and the film have a special feeling that makes them unique. The main characters, Charlie and Finn, are played by Dexter Sol Ansell and Roman Griffin Davis. Mark was amazed at how much the actors matched the characters he had imagined when he wrote the book. He said it was wonderful to see the actors bring his characters to life, just as he had pictured them. The parents in the film are played by Michael Socha and Claire Dunne, and Mark thought they did a fantastic job as well. Bill Nighy plays the boys' estranged grandfather, which Mark thought was very exciting. Maisie Williams plays Kait, a musician who joins the boys on their journey.

Mark attended the film's premiere in Dublin with his family in February. He said that while the plot and some characters were a bit different from the book, the film still kept the heart and spirit of his story. Mark was proud of how the movie captured what he wanted to share in his book, even though it was told in a different way. He said it was amazing to see actors bring his characters to life and to watch his story unfold on the big screen. Mark hopes that people who watch 500 Miles will enjoy it as much as he enjoyed writing Charlie and Me. He is grateful for the chance to see his story reach a wider audience and hopes that it will inspire others to believe in their dreams.
