Aamir revealed that it was his children who encouraged him to return to the film industry. They playfully told him, 'But we can't spend 24 hours with you. So get real and get a life. ' Their gentle nudging helped him realize that he could balance his family life with his career. At 59 years old, Aamir has spent three decades in the film industry, working as an actor, director, and producer. He is often referred to as one of the three 'Khans of Bollywood,' alongside fellow megastars Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. Aamir is known for addressing social issues in his films, which have not only received critical acclaim but have also shattered box office records. He has a history with the Oscars, as his film Lagaan was nominated for best foreign language film in 2002. Now, Aamir is aiming to make history with Laapataa Ladies. If the film succeeds, it would be the first Indian film to win the prestigious international award. Aamir expressed his mixed feelings about awards, stating, 'I'm not quite sure how seriously' to take them. He acknowledges that cinema is subjective, but he admits that a win would hold great significance for India. He remarked, 'I think Indians are so film crazy and we've been dying to win the Academy Award for an Indian film, which hasn't happened till now. So the country will go ballistic. They'll just go mad if we win. ' Laapataa Ladies is set in rural India and tells the story of a young man who mistakenly brings home the wrong bride, while his actual wife gets lost and must fend for herself. Aamir describes the plot as 'a bit Shakespearean,' highlighting its humorous elements and themes of mistaken identities. He believes the film conveys important messages about women's issues, their independence, and their right to make choices. Aamir explained, 'Every now and then you get an opportunity as a creative person to actually also sensitise people about certain issues that we face in society. ' He feels that women worldwide face numerous challenges, and he wanted to tell a story that effectively brings these issues to light. Aamir was also keen on having his ex-wife, Kiran Rao, direct Laapataa Ladies. The couple, who married in 2005, announced their separation in 2021 but have maintained a close relationship both personally and professionally. Aamir stated, 'I think the reason I chose Kiran was because I knew that she would be very honest with it and that's what I wanted. ' Their strong bond allows them to work together effectively, even if it sometimes leads to disagreements on set. Aamir humorously noted, 'We can't make a film without an argument. ' Bollywood is a massive industry that produces hundreds of films each year and has a vast following among Indian audiences worldwide. Aamir believes that Indian cinema has seen recent success at the Academy Awards, with notable wins such as Naatu Naatu from RRR for best original song and The Elephant Whisperers for best documentary short film. Occasionally it's a matter of the right film not getting sent or the best film not getting sent. Aamir believes that for Bollywood films to win the best overall film award, filmmakers need to start creating movies with a global audience in mind. He admitted, 'I've never really looked at an international audience. ' Aamir is currently focused on various projects alongside Laapataa Ladies, including his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, set to be released in 2025. He aspires to produce one film each year, with his ultimate dream project being an adaptation of the ancient Indian epic, Mahabharat. Since returning to the film industry, Aamir is determined to approach his work differently. His children have influenced him to seek a balance between his professional and personal life. Aamir shared, 'My son said, 'You're an extreme person. ' He encouraged him to find a middle ground. Aamir has taken this advice to heart, stating, 'I don't work after 6 o'clock anymore. ' He has also started therapy, inspired by his daughter Ira, who works in mental health. Aamir believes that therapy has helped him understand himself better and achieve a balance between work and personal life. He feels that he has reached a point where he can enjoy both aspects of his life.
