The final version of The Cornfield, which Constable finished in 1826, is now displayed at the National Gallery in London. The discovery of the oil study helps art historians understand more about Constable's creative process and why he made such detailed studies before completing his paintings. It also raises interesting questions about how the painting ended up in Texas, so far from where it was made.
