The account used the display name marco. rubio@state. gov and reached out to at least five people. These included three foreign ministers, a US governor, and a member of Congress. The fake Rubio left voicemails for at least two of the targets and sent a text message to another, inviting them to continue the conversation on Signal. The cable did not reveal the exact content of the voicemails or the identities of the people who were contacted.

The State Department stated that there is no direct cyber threat to its systems from this incident. However, there is a risk that information shared with the impersonator could be exposed if the targeted individuals were tricked. The department is now working to improve its cybersecurity defenses to prevent similar incidents in the future.
