UV levels are unusually high in the UK for this time of year, and it is important to understand what UV is and how it can affect us. UV stands for ultraviolet radiation, which comes from the Sun and passes through the Earth's atmosphere. While some UV exposure is good because it helps our bodies make vitamin D, too much can be harmful. Vitamin D is important for healthy bones, blood cells, and our immune system, but overexposure to UV can damage our skin and eyes. It can cause sunburn, speed up skin aging, and even lead to skin cancer.
The strength of UV rays changes throughout the day. The highest UV levels usually happen around midday, when the Sun is at its highest point. Scientists use the UV Index to measure how strong the UV rays are. The UV Index starts at zero and can go above ten. The higher the number, the more dangerous the UV is. According to the World Health Organization, you do not need sun protection when the UV Index is low, which is one or two. When it is medium or high, between three and seven, you should use sunscreen and wear sunglasses. If the UV Index is very high or extremely high, which is eight or more, you need extra protection. In the UK, the UV Index is usually around five or six in the summer, but it can go higher in other countries closer to the equator.
To protect yourself from UV, you should use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and make sure it has good UVA protection. Apply it to all exposed skin, including your face, neck, ears, and head if you have thin or no hair. Put it on about 30 minutes before you go outside, and reapply every two hours, or more often if you sweat, swim, or dry off with a towel. You should also wear protective clothing, sunglasses, and try to stay in the shade when the Sun is strongest, usually between 11 am and 3 pm. Children are more sensitive to UV, so they need extra protection. There is no safe way to get a tan from the Sun, because tanning means your skin is being damaged. Even on cloudy or windy days, UV rays can still reach your skin and cause burns. People with all skin colors can be affected by UV, so everyone should take care. Protecting your skin from UV now can help prevent problems like skin cancer and eye damage in the future.
