Gordon Butcher, a ploughman, was working in a field near Mildenhall when he stumbled upon something extraordinary. As he turned the soil, he uncovered a collection of 34 silver objects, including large plates, bowls, spoons, and dishes. These items were not just old; they dated back to the 4th century, from the time when the Romans lived in Britain.

Roald Dahl read about this incredible find in a newspaper and was so fascinated that he drove to Mildenhall to investigate. He interviewed Gordon Butcher, his wife, neighbors, and local shopkeepers to learn every detail about the discovery. Dahl described the excitement he felt, saying it sent shivers down his legs. He wrote an account of the treasure hunt, which became one of his first published stories.

However, the story took a complicated turn. Even though Butcher was the one who found the treasure, he did not get to keep it. The landowner, Syd Ford, did not report the discovery to the authorities right away. After a police investigation and a court case, both Butcher and Ford received a reward of £1,000 each, but the treasure itself was handed over to the British Museum. Today, experts estimate the treasure would be worth about £2. 7 million. Dahl's story was first published in the American magazine Saturday Evening Post in 1947 and later as a book in 1977.

Kay Finnis, Gordon Butcher's granddaughter, shared that her family rarely spoke about the treasure. She believes that if her grandfather had reported the find immediately, their lives might have been very different. She feels that everything happened as it was meant to, even though it was a stressful time for her grandfather.

Recently, the book 'The Mildenhall Treasure' was reprinted after being unavailable for many years. This was made possible by the efforts of the Mildenhall Museum, which was celebrating its 75th anniversary, and local MP Nick Timothy. They contacted Netflix, the company that now owns the rights to Roald Dahl's stories, and were surprised when Netflix agreed to let them republish the book. The new edition is now available for people to buy.

Students from St Mary's Primary School in Mildenhall were among the first to hear the story from the newly printed book during a special visit to the museum. They also saw replicas of the treasure. Ten-year-old Nathaniel said he was excited to read the book, and his classmate Gabrielle was amazed to learn that such a treasure was found in her hometown.

The Mildenhall Treasure is now a highlight at the British Museum, admired by thousands of visitors each year. Richard Hobbs, a curator at the museum, describes it as one of the finest sets of late Roman dining silver ever found. He also praised Roald Dahl for documenting the story, noting that Dahl was the only person to interview Gordon Butcher. The story remains one of the few true treasure discovery tales, and it continues to capture the imagination of people of all ages.
