Artificial intelligence, or AI, is becoming more important in the UK, and it needs a lot of electricity to run. Data centres, which are large buildings filled with computers, are essential for supporting AI and other digital services like online banking and gaming. Right now, there are about 140 data centres waiting to be connected to the electricity grid in the UK. The government is considering a new plan that would let these AI data centres get priority access to electricity, ahead of other projects like new homes or hospitals.
Currently, all new projects that need electricity, such as hospitals, factories, and housing developments, have to join a virtual queue. This queue has grown by 460 percent in the first half of 2025, mostly because of the high demand from data centres. Some projects are now facing waits of several years before they can get connected and start operating. The government’s new proposal would allow projects that promise the most economic growth and job creation to move ahead in the queue. This means that AI data centres, electric vehicle charging hubs, and factories switching from fossil fuels to electricity could be given priority.
However, this plan has raised concerns among home builders. The Home Builders Federation warns that if new housing developments are not given priority, it could become almost impossible to build new homes in areas where the electricity grid is already full. They argue that families need new, energy-efficient homes, and it is unfair if data centres are always put first. In some parts of London, new housing projects have already been delayed because there is not enough electricity available. There are nearly 500 data centres in the UK, and they already use about 2 percent of the country’s electricity. As AI technology grows, the number of data centres and their electricity use could increase by up to six times by 2050. The government is trying to find a way to support both the growing tech industry and the need for new homes, but it is a difficult balance to achieve.
