Instagram is introducing a new feature to help keep teenagers safe online. If a teen keeps searching for topics related to self-harm or suicide, their parents will now get an alert. The alerts will start next week for families in the UK, US, Australia, and Canada, and will be available in other countries later.

Some organizations are worried about this new feature. The Molly Rose Foundation, a charity that works to prevent suicide, says these alerts could actually make things worse. Andy Burrows, the head of the foundation, said that while parents want to know if their child is struggling, these alerts might make parents panic and not know how to talk about such sensitive topics. He thinks the notifications are not strong enough and could leave parents feeling lost. The foundation was started by the family of Molly Russell, a 14-year-old who died in 2017 after seeing harmful content online.

Meta says that when parents get an alert, they will also receive expert advice to help them talk to their child. Another charity, Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide, said they are glad Instagram is trying to help, but they believe Meta is not doing enough to stop harmful content from reaching young people. They say parents are worried about what their children see online and want more protection, not just warnings. Some reports say Instagram still shows harmful content to vulnerable teens, but Meta disagrees and says they are working hard to keep teens safe.

Instagram already has some protections for teens, like hiding posts about self-harm and suicide and blocking searches for dangerous topics. The new alerts will be sent to parents by email, text, WhatsApp, or through the Instagram app, depending on what contact information Meta has. Sometimes, parents might get an alert even if there is no real danger, but Meta says it is better to be safe. Experts say it is important that parents get good advice with the alert, so they know how to help their child. In the future, Instagram might also send alerts if teens talk about self-harm or suicide with its AI chatbot.

Social media companies are under more pressure from governments to make their platforms safer for children. In Australia, new rules are being made, and other countries like Spain, France, and the UK are also taking action. Lawmakers are watching big tech companies closely to make sure they protect young users. Meta's leaders have even had to answer questions in court about how they keep children safe online.
