Singapore has recently unveiled its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy (NAIS) 2. 0. This strategy includes a plan to triple the size of its AI expert pool. Analysts believe this could provide a crucial framework for Asia in its collective battle against the escalating threat of cyber scams.

Singapore is uniquely positioned to play a significant role in this area. With the launch of the Model AI Governance Framework in 2019 and AI Verify in 2022, it has established itself as a practical and pragmatic partner in the AI ecosystem. The AI Governance Framework is built around principles such as transparency, explainability, safety, security, accountability, human agency, and oversight. AI Verify is a testing framework for these governance principles.

Experts argue that the establishment of such a framework is necessary to ensure that the development of AI technology, which can evolve rapidly and unpredictably, is conducted in a manner that prioritises safety and security. When it comes to expanding the AI workforce, they believe it's the correct approach: first, establish the governance mechanism, then begin to grow - to triple the pool of AI practitioners, for instance. This could serve as a model for other countries, both in the region and beyond.
