Nathan Slate, an artist and fashion designer from Bridgwater, has created a unique exhibition about nature that is open to everyone. The exhibition, called 'A Memory of Nature,' is set up in the Angel Place shopping centre in Bridgwater and is free for anyone to visit until 2 August. Nathan wanted to make art that was accessible, so he chose a public place where people might not usually see art. The exhibition is designed to remind people of the beauty of nature, especially as the world faces changes from climate change. Nathan said he did not want the exhibition to make people feel sad or hopeless about the environment. Instead, he wanted it to feel peaceful and full of hope. Some visitors have even asked if they can bring a book and spend more time in the calming space.
The exhibition features hanging textiles that Nathan painted with shadows of trees and birds. He was inspired by the way shadows fall on his sheets when he hangs his washing outside. In the middle of the room, there is a construction that looks like a white cloud, which is lit up to create a soft, dreamy atmosphere. The exhibition also includes sounds and images that help visitors remember what nature feels like. Nathan explained that he wanted people to think about what life would be like if nature disappeared, but he also wanted them to feel inspired to protect the environment. The art installation encourages people to talk about the future and the importance of nature in their lives.
Nathan worked with Seed Sedgemoor, a group of local organizations, to bring the exhibition to the shopping centre. At first, Nathan was unsure about showing his work in such a public place because he worried it might not be taken seriously. However, he realized that it was important for everyone to have the chance to experience real art, not just people who visit galleries or museums. Laura Hylton from Seed Sedgemoor said that their goal is to work with the community and bring new experiences to people for free. The Arts Council also supported the exhibition. Nathan and the team hope that the exhibition will inspire visitors to appreciate nature and think about how they can help protect it for the future.
