Henry Orlik, a 78-year-old artist from Swindon, is finally having his first solo exhibition in a public gallery after decades away from the art world. Orlik is known for his surrealist paintings, which feature vibrant colors, unusual shapes, and precise details. One of his most famous works, 'eggs unhatched under the sun,' shows a reddish-brown landscape filled with small holes, some containing colorful eggs and others empty, all under a bright sky with a shining sun. The gallery space highlights his art with a striking red wall behind the largest painting, making the colors pop even more.

Orlik first gained recognition in the 1970s, exhibiting his work alongside legendary artists like Salvador Dali. However, he became disillusioned with the commercial side of art and chose to step away, becoming reclusive in the 1980s. For many years, his paintings were not seen by the public, but recently, he has made a remarkable comeback. His art has sold for over £2 million and has been featured in private galleries in London and New York, drawing attention from collectors and art lovers.

The current exhibition at Swindon Museum and Art, a council-owned institution, marks a significant moment in Orlik's career. Grant Ford, an expert from Antiques Roadshow, played a key role in bringing Orlik's work to the gallery. Ford believes it is important for everyone to have the chance to see Orlik's unique art. The museum went through a lengthy process to secure funding to purchase 'eggs unhatched under the sun,' and John Wood from the museum says it is a privilege to showcase Orlik's work. Orlik's paintings are known for their precision, with some taking up to nine months to complete. Ford, who has worked at Sotheby's for 30 years, says he has never seen anything quite like Orlik's art. The exhibition, titled 'The Lost Surrealist: Henry Orlik's Quantum Revolution,' will be open to the public until March 2026, giving visitors plenty of time to explore the fascinating world of this rediscovered artist.
