Transport secretary Heidi Alexander described the news as a 'vote of confidence' in the country's plans for autonomous vehicles. She explained that the government is preparing to allow self-driving cars to carry passengers for the first time in the spring, as part of a pilot program. Jack Stilgoe, a professor of science and technology policy at University College London, pointed out that there is a big difference between testing a few vehicles on public streets and creating a fully developed system that can serve as a real transport option for everyone. He emphasized that safety, privacy, and the potential for increased congestion are important issues that need to be addressed before self-driving taxis become a common sight on UK roads.

Public opinion about driverless taxis remains mixed. A recent survey found that nearly 60 percent of UK respondents would not feel comfortable riding in a driverless taxi under any circumstances. Furthermore, 85 percent said they would choose a traditional cab with a human driver if the price and convenience were the same. Stories about autonomous vehicles making mistakes, causing traffic jams, or being involved in accidents continue to raise concerns. For example, in San Francisco, some Waymo driverless cars stopped working during a power cut, causing disruptions. Professor Stilgoe suggested that the UK should take the lead in setting standards for self-driving technology to ensure safety and minimize negative impacts like increased traffic. He noted that London has been successful in reducing cars in its city center, but warned that self-driving cars could make congestion worse if not managed properly. As Uber and Lyft work to bring robotaxis to London, they must prove that their vehicles are safe, reliable, and ready for everyday use.
