Kamal, a 24-year-old singer-songwriter from north-west London, has just released his debut album after years of working his way through the music industry. He started his journey as a teenager, signing with the independent label Neighbourhood Recordings. Kamal’s breakout single Homebody became popular during the lockdown, and his R&B-influenced track Blue brought him even more attention, including from US superstar Billie Eilish. Kamal was thrilled when he learned Billie Eilish had added his song to her Spotify playlist, saying it was exciting to be recognized by someone with such a strong taste in music. Kamal’s music is known for its honesty, and he admits it was intimidating to ask award-winning rapper Dave to feature on his album. Dave, who has won Brit Awards and a Mercury Prize, appears on Kamal’s track The People That Saved Me, opening the song with touching lyrics about love and memories. Kamal says Dave is a humble person who leads with a love for music, which is something Kamal relates to deeply. Kamal had previously featured on Dave’s 2021 track Mercury, so their connection was already established, but Kamal still felt nervous because Dave was someone he admired growing up.

Kamal has also collaborated with Central Cee, another well-known rapper. He featured on Central Cee’s 2025 track Now We’re Strangers and performed it live at London’s The O2, a venue many musicians dream of playing. Kamal describes the experience as surreal and says it was a special moment in his career. Despite these big collaborations, Kamal remains focused on creating music that is meaningful and honest. He believes that the music itself is the most important factor, and that support from other artists only comes if there is something special in the music to begin with. Kamal wants to keep his original fans at the center of his work, saying that those who truly love his music recognize the common thread of vulnerable and honest writing. His 13-track album includes songs like Suffer, which explores themes of love and heartbreak, and All My Favourite People Are Sad, which deals with depression and friendship. Kamal’s music is reflective and often experiments with new sounds, adding depth to his soft singing voice.

Kamal’s background is a mix of Trinidad, Belize, English, and Palestinian, and his childhood was filled with music. He started playing piano at a young age and says his relationship with music came before any dreams of fame. Kamal feels grateful for everything that has happened so far but believes he still has a long way to go in his career. He also has thoughts about the current generation’s use of social media, like TikTok. While he acknowledges that these platforms help artists who might not have had a chance otherwise, he feels that the constant stream of content can make music feel like fast food, and that art is sometimes treated more as content than as true artistic expression. Kamal says you have to search through all the content to find real art and maintain a sense of taste. As he continues to grow as an artist, Kamal is taking things day by day, focusing on finding the best vibe, sound, and lyrics for his next songs. He is excited about the future, grateful for the support he has received, and determined to keep making music that is honest and meaningful for his fans.
