Some Zambians jokingly called the fugu a 'blouse,' which led to a strong reaction from Ghanaians on social media. Ghana's Minister for Tourism, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, announced that wearing the fugu every week would help promote Ghana's identity and culture around the world. She encouraged people to wear the fugu in all its different styles and with its unique accessories.

The fugu, also known as batakari, is a traditional top from northern Ghana. It is made by weaving thick cotton into narrow strips and sewing them together to create a structured, poncho-like garment. The fugu is worn by both traditional leaders and ordinary people, and it is seen as a symbol of royalty and authority. Minister Gomashie said that making the fugu more popular would help local weavers, designers, and traders. She believes that this weekly tradition will not only boost the creative economy but also bring Ghanaians together and make them feel more united.

After the announcement, many Ghanaians wore their fugu on Wednesday, showing off different colors and designs. The outfit became a trending topic on social media, with people posting photos and sharing their pride. This movement also brought back the idea of 'Fugu Friday,' a tradition started by a previous government to encourage wearing traditional clothes at the end of the week. The online debate even caught the attention of Zambia's President Hakainde Hichilema, who said his country would order fugus from Ghana. President Mahama also suggested exporting the fugu to Zambia in large amounts. He pointed out that Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah, wore the fugu on Independence Day in 1957, and that he himself had worn it at the United Nations. Other presidents, such as Nana Akufo-Addo, John Kufuor, and Jerry John Rawlings, have also worn the fugu in public. The fugu has now become a powerful symbol of Ghana's culture, unity, and pride.
