Chester Zoo has announced the sad news that Boris, a 58-year-old chimpanzee, has died. Boris was a beloved resident of the zoo since 1969, when he was rescued from a pet shop in New York City. Mike Jordan, the zoo's director of animals and plants, expressed the zoo's sorrow, saying, 'This is one of those days that you hope will never come and we’re all heartbroken to say goodbye to Boris – he really was one in a million. ' Boris was one of the oldest chimpanzees at the zoo and had been in good health until recently when his condition worsened. The veterinarians had to make the difficult decision to put him down on Wednesday. The staff at Chester Zoo are reflecting on the incredible impact Boris had on the conservation of his species. Boris played a crucial role in starting the international breeding program for western chimpanzees, and he fathered 22 offspring. Some of his descendants, including Annie, Stevie, Toyah, Eric, Patti, Alice, and Jeff, still live at Chester Zoo. Mike Jordan also mentioned that Boris left behind an extraordinary legacy, especially considering the difficult start he had in life. After being rescued from the pet shop, Boris was raised by Hester Mundis, an author and journalist who wanted to raise awareness about animal rights. She cared for him for several years before reaching out to Chester Zoo. In honor of his legacy, the zoo even has a bronze statue of Boris. Andy Lenihan, who had been involved in Boris's care for over 40 years, described him as 'a wonderfully colourful character' and said that losing him feels like losing an old friend. The zoo staff and visitors will surely miss Boris, who brought joy and education to many people during his long life.
