Traveling to rural Wales to see the stars was an unforgettable experience. When I first arrived, the sky was so dark that I could not see any stars, only clouds. It took more than four hours for the clouds to move, but when they did, the sky was filled with stars in every direction. I was joined by Siân and James Harrison, who are both passionate about stargazing. They had traveled from Cardiff to the small village of Gogoyan in Ceredigion, west Wales, to enjoy the night sky. We were guided by Dafydd Wyn Morgan, who runs an astrotourism company called Serydda. We lay on a blanket and looked up at the sky, using a smart telescope to see planets and stars. Dafydd used a green laser pointer to show us different stars and constellations, including Orion's Belt. James said Orion's Belt was his favorite because it is a place where new stars are born. He talked about how far away the stars are and how hard it is to imagine those distances. Looking at the stars made me feel peaceful, as if I was seeing the same sky my ancestors saw long ago. Dafydd's star bathing sessions are not just about learning facts. He tells stories and legends about the stars, making the experience more about feelings and emotions. He said that enjoying the stars can inspire people to learn more about astronomy. Siân became interested in the night sky after getting a smart telescope for her birthday. Dafydd started his company in January 2025, after organizing events with his friend, a famous astrophotographer. Since then, more than 100 people have joined his workshops, and some have come back several times to see the stars from different places. Interest in star bathing is growing, with many people wanting to visit dark sky areas. We drove to Llyn Teifi in the Cambrian mountains and stood on a bridge surrounded by rocks and marshland. Dafydd asked if we could smell the fresh night air, saying it was pure and clean. I felt a childlike joy when I saw shooting stars. People have always been fascinated by the night sky. Dani Robertson, who works for Snowdonia National Park, said that most people in the UK live in places with too much light to see the stars. Wales has two national parks with International Dark Sky Reserve status, and people travel from cities like London to see the stars. Dani organizes stargazing events, night hikes, and meteor watch parties. She told us about a man who cried when he saw shooting stars for the first time. For people who live in cities, seeing the stars can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Dani said there is a huge demand for her events, and she cannot organize enough to meet it. Nature has a positive effect on our minds and bodies. Annalisa Setti, a psychology lecturer, said that looking at nature helps people feel relaxed and happy. When children cannot see stars, they miss out on inspiration. However, light pollution is making it harder to see the night sky. Dani said that using dark-sky friendly bulbs, turning off lights when not needed, and closing curtains can help. Some people travel for hours just to see the stars. Late at night, we saw a cloud-like shape in the sky, which turned out to be the Milky Way. We stood in silence, amazed by the beauty and size of the galaxy. James said it was incredible to see so many stars and to think about how big the universe is.
