A four-year-old girl named Willow has inspired a new children's book focused on food allergies. Willow, who lives in York, has serious allergies to milk, eggs, soya, and wheat. Her mother, Rachel West, discovered these allergies when Willow was just 11 months old after noticing that she had developed skin problems. Rachel explained that this made the weaning process very challenging for their family, as they were frightened to introduce Willow to regular foods. To help raise awareness about food allergies among children and their parents, a family friend named Sylvia Buck decided to write a book titled 'Willow Come to Tea? ' The book is written in a fun rhyming style and aims to explain what food allergies are and how to avoid potential dangers. Sylvia is a friend of Willow's grandfather, who had previously purchased two copies of her earlier book for his grandchildren. When Rachel saw those books, she expressed her wish that someone would write a book about allergies. Sylvia took this to heart and began researching food allergies online, realizing the importance of spreading awareness. She said, 'I thought we need to do something, write a book, and get the message out there to help all these kids. ' Willow's parents were deeply concerned about her health. They noticed that she was not eating or sleeping well and was often crying. After numerous visits to the doctor, they were finally referred to a skin specialist. Rachel shared that they made many changes in their home, including altering the materials Willow wore, changing her baby formula, and even replacing the flooring in their house. Eventually, they consulted a dermatologist who performed an allergy skin prick test, which confirmed that Willow was allergic to milk, eggs, soya, and wheat. Rachel expressed their fear of giving Willow new foods, saying, 'We had no idea what was coming, and it's ongoing. ' She emphasized that many people are unaware of the struggles faced by those living with allergies, which is why the book was created. Rachel wants to increase awareness and understanding of allergies, as they have significantly impacted their lives. She mentioned that even a simple day out with the kids requires careful planning. Willow herself shared that drinking milk makes her feel 'poorly' and expressed her hope that the book will help raise awareness about allergies. Sylvia recalled her conversations with Willow while writing the book, noting how unusual it was to hear a child talk about foods like fresh fruits and vegetables instead of the typical pizzas and burgers that many kids enjoy. She pointed out that Willow has grown up eating more adult foods. Sylvia believes it is crucial to convey the message that there is nothing wrong with children who have allergies; they simply cannot eat the same foods as everyone else. All proceeds from the book sales will be donated to Allergy UK, a charity dedicated to supporting those with allergies.
