A team of researchers at the University of Oxford is making progress in developing new cancer vaccines that use artificial intelligence, or AI. These vaccines are designed to be personalized for each patient, which means they are made to match the unique features of a person's cancer. The project, called the UK Cancer Vaccine AI & Supercomputing Project, has just received new funding from the Medical Research Council. This money will help the team buy important equipment and move forward with their research, including making and testing experimental mRNA cancer vaccines.

The project brings together a large group of experts, including doctors, cancer scientists, AI specialists, robotics engineers, and manufacturing experts. Dr Lennard Lee, who leads the project, says that using AI allows them to move much faster in developing new drugs that are tailored to each patient. The AI platform they use is called CIARA. It helps the team analyze cancer cells, plan experiments, and choose the best targets for the vaccines. The researchers are also using powerful supercomputers, such as DAWN, to process huge amounts of data about cancer and the immune system. This lets them do things that would not be possible with regular computers.

With the new funding, the team will be able to make the experimental vaccines and test them on patient samples to see if the AI's predictions are correct. The main goal is to find out if the vaccines can help the immune system create strong responses against cancer. Dr Lee says that patients often ask if AI will really make a difference for people with cancer. He believes that this project shows that the UK has world-class AI systems and that it is now possible to move quickly from AI predictions to real treatments. The project is also supported by other organizations, such as UK Research and Innovation, the Advanced Research and Invention Agency, and Cancer Research UK. The team hopes their work will lead to new ways to treat cancer and help patients in the future.
