Teenagers in Bristol are feeling anxious and uncertain about a new government plan to ban social media apps like TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, and YouTube for young people. The ban is expected to start by next spring, and students at John Cabot Academy in Kingswood have been sharing their thoughts on how this will affect their lives. Giselle, a Year 8 student, said she spends a lot of time on TikTok, where she discovers new interests and things she enjoys. She is worried about what she will do with her free time once the ban is in place. Giselle also mentioned that moving all her conversations to WhatsApp will make her feel less connected to friends she does not see often, since she might not message them as much. Erin, who uses Snapchat and Instagram, agreed that the ban will make it harder to keep in touch with friends. She said she will have to collect everyone's phone numbers to move their chats to WhatsApp, which could be difficult because she does not have all her friends' numbers.

Not all students think the ban is a bad idea. Arlo, a Year 7 student, said he will miss using messaging apps, but he might spend more time outside if he cannot use them. Ishrat, who only uses WhatsApp, believes the ban is for the greater good. He thinks it is safer to talk to people you know in real life, and that not using social media will help students focus better in school and avoid getting addicted. Ayera and Poppy, both in Year 9, also see some benefits. Ayera said that social media can hurt mental health and make it harder to pay attention in class. She thinks the ban will help her be more social in person. Poppy hopes that even if students are upset about the ban now, they will see the positive effects in the future, like better communication with friends face-to-face.

The head of John Cabot Academy, Gemma Read, said the school will support students and families as they adjust to the new rules. She said the government guidelines have been clear, but the school will need to plan carefully and work with the community to solve any problems that come up. The school also wants to create more activities for students so they do not feel like they are missing out.

Experts have different opinions about the ban. Professor Sander van der Linden from the University of Cambridge said that most people are not truly addicted to social media, but it can become a bad habit. He does not think banning social media is the best solution. Instead, he suggests that parents should limit their children's screen time, encourage other activities, and talk to them about what they see online. He also thinks social media companies should be held responsible for their platforms.

The government says the ban is a 'defining moment' that will give children the freedom to be kids again and give parents more control. However, some youth organisations believe the government should also focus on providing more opportunities for young people. Mendip Adventure, an outdoor activity provider, said that if social media is taken away, something better should be offered in its place. They believe outdoor activities help young people build confidence, resilience, and social skills. The Music Works, which mentors young people in Gloucestershire, supports the ban but says the government must also fund youth services and community activities.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport announced it will invest over £3 billion in programmes for young people. This includes building or improving youth centres, funding school sports, and saving arts venues like museums and libraries. The department said it listened to young people who want things to do, places to go, and people who care about them. In recent years, many youth centres closed and youth worker jobs were lost, but the government now wants to make sure every young person has support and opportunities.
