Councillor Jackie Dad explained that The Big Malarkey is about more than just reading; it is about encouraging children to think creatively and express themselves in new ways.

The festival was first started in 2017, during Hull's year as the UK City of Culture. Since then, it has grown every year, attracting more visitors and offering even more activities. This year, the festival will begin with the James Reckitt Reading Conference on the fifteenth of June, followed by a week of special activities for schools. One of the highlights is the James Reckitt Hull Children's Book Awards, where children aged seven to eleven can meet authors and vote for their favorite book in a live event. This gives young readers a chance to have their voices heard and to celebrate the books they love.

During the main festival weekend, the popular Hook-a-Book stall will be back, giving away free books to everyone who attends. This is a great way to encourage children to read more and to discover new stories. Tickets for the festival can be bought online or at any Hull Library, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
