Sir Nicholas Grimshaw, the renowned architect behind the Eden Project in Cornwall, has died at the age of 85. The Eden Project is famous for its large glass biomes, which were built in a former clay quarry and now house thousands of plant species from around the world. These biomes were inspired by the simple shape of soap bubbles, and their design has helped the Eden Project become a major visitor attraction and environmental charity since it opened in 2001. Grimshaw's creative vision made the biomes look as if they naturally belong in the landscape, blending the buildings with the surrounding trees and plants.

In addition to the Eden Project, Sir Nicholas Grimshaw designed several other landmark buildings. He was responsible for the Ship building in Plymouth, which was once the headquarters of the Western Morning News and is now used for offices and activities. He also designed the International Terminal at Waterloo Station in London, a glass-and-steel structure that won the Royal Institute of British Architects Building of the Year Award in 1994. Grimshaw founded his own architecture firm in 1980, and his colleagues described him as a man of invention and endless curiosity. They admired his ability to turn bold ideas into reality and said his leadership style was warm and open, making everyone feel valued in the studio.

Sir Nicholas was knighted in 2002 for his contributions to architecture and served as president of the Royal Academy from 2004 to 2011. In 2022, he established the Grimshaw Foundation to encourage young people to explore innovative design, creativity, and sustainability. The Eden Project team expressed their sadness at his passing but celebrated his genius and the lasting impact of his work. They said his vision empowered people to embrace ideas inspired by nature and that the biomes he designed are a testament to his creativity. Sir Nicholas is survived by his wife Lady Lavinia and their daughters Chloe and Isabel. His legacy lives on in the buildings he created and the inspiration he gave to others.
