Glasgow is preparing to host the Commonwealth Games once again, but this time the event will be on a smaller scale than in 2014. Back then, the city welcomed over 50,000 fans to Hampden Park to watch stars like Usain Bolt race for gold. In 2026, the main athletics events will take place at Scotstoun Stadium, which holds 11,000 spectators. Organizers are confident that the smaller venues will still create an exciting atmosphere for the 3,000 athletes competing for 215 gold medals over ten days. The opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the Hydro, a modern arena that will be decorated with banners for the Games.

The Games will officially begin with bowls and para-bowls heats, but the highlight will be the opening ceremony attended by athletes from 74 nations and territories, as well as dignitaries like the Prime Minister and Scotland’s First Minister. Volunteers aged 16 to 96 will help make the event run smoothly. Glasgow stepped in to host the Games after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew due to rising costs. The city will use four venues along an eight-mile stretch, including Scotstoun Stadium, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Glasgow International Arena, and the Scottish Event Campus. The budget for this edition is £150 million, much less than the £543 million spent in 2014, with most funding coming from commercial sources like ticket sales and sponsorships.

Athletics, cycling, and swimming are the most popular sports, but tickets are still available for many events. Some of the world’s top athletes will compete in Glasgow, including Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah, a five-time Olympic champion, and Scotland’s Eilish McColgan, who won the 10,000 meters in Birmingham four years ago. South African swimmer Chad Le Clos, who famously beat Michael Phelps at the London Olympics, will try to become the most decorated male athlete in Commonwealth Games history. Other big names include Canadian sprinter Andre De Grasse and Jamaican sprinter Shericka Jackson.

There are some changes to the sports program this year. The mile race returns for the first time since 1966, replacing the 1500 meters. Three Scottish runners, including world champion Josh Kerr, will compete for medals in this event. Some sports, like hockey, mountain biking, road races, rhythmic gymnastics, badminton, squash, and diving, have been dropped from the program. Bowls will be played indoors, and only artistic gymnastics will be included.

The baton relay, a traditional part of the Games, is different this year. Instead of one baton traveling around the Commonwealth, each team received its own baton to decorate. In Scotland, the baton has visited communities and events across all 32 local authorities.

The opening ceremony will feature performances by KT Tunstall, Callum Beattie, Nathan Evans, Tom Walker, and Saint Phnx. The closing ceremony will include Delta Goodrem and Bollywood star Shankar Mahadevan, reflecting the international spirit of the Games.

Scotland’s flagbearers for the opening ceremony are judo champion Sarah Adlington and bowls legend Alex Marshall. The official mascot is Clyde, a green thistle, who returns alongside Finnie, a unicorn with a traffic cone horn. The city is ready to celebrate and support the athletes as they compete for glory at the Commonwealth Games.
