Mali has been grappling with significant challenges over the past few years, including violence from jihadist groups and separatist movements. These issues have led to military coups in 2020 and 2021, with the current junta promising to hold elections to restore civilian rule by March 2024. However, this promise has yet to be fulfilled. The ongoing instability in the country, particularly in the northern and eastern regions, has made governance extremely difficult. Additionally, high unemployment rates and the adverse effects of climate change on agriculture have compelled many individuals to seek better opportunities in Europe. Unfortunately, the journey across the sea is fraught with danger. According to a Spanish human rights organization, more than 10,000 people have lost their lives this year while attempting to reach Spain by boat from Africa, making this one of the most perilous migrant routes in the world. The organization reported an average of 30 deaths per day among those trying to make this treacherous crossing. The migration route stretches from the Atlantic coasts of Mauritania and Morocco to Spain and is notorious for its risks. Many of those who embark on this dangerous journey come from sub-Saharan Africa, fleeing poverty and conflict in their home countries. The distance between Morocco and Spain is relatively short, with the closest point being just eight nautical miles or 14 kilometers apart.
