Treating chlamydia with antibiotics is risky because it destroys the good bacteria in the koala's stomach, which they need to digest eucalyptus leaves. Without these bacteria, koalas can starve because eucalyptus leaves are their main food.

The vaccine is a big step forward because chlamydia is the main reason koalas are dying. In some places, up to 70 percent of koalas are infected, and experts think there may be only about 50,000 koalas left in the wild. The vaccine was tested on hundreds of wild koalas, and the results showed that it reduced the chances of koalas getting sick and dying by at least 65 percent. The scientists hope to provide the vaccine for free and start giving it to the most at-risk koalas as soon as possible. However, finding and vaccinating wild koalas is expensive, and the team still needs more money to make it happen. The scientists also say that saving koalas will take more than just the vaccine. Koalas need safe places to live, so protecting their habitats is very important. The government is helping by creating new parks and nature reserves, like the Great Koala National Park, which will protect thousands of koalas and other animals.
