Topshop, the well-known fashion brand, is set to make a return to the UK High Street in 2026, five years after closing all its physical stores. Starting in February 2026, Topshop will be available in 32 John Lewis stores across the country, while its menswear line, Topman, will be sold in six John Lewis locations. The brand disappeared from the High Street after the collapse of Sir Philip Green's retail empire, which also owned other popular brands like Burton and Dorothy Perkins. After Topshop's closure, the brand was bought by the online retailer Asos, which later sold its majority stake to Danish retail tycoon Anders Holch Povlsen last September. Now, Topshop is preparing for a major comeback, with its products currently available on the Asos website and a newly relaunched standalone Topshop site.

Michelle Wilson, the managing director of Topshop and Topman, explained that customers have been eager to see Topshop return to physical stores. She said, 'Customers absolutely want to see us back in stores and we want to bring that nationwide. ' The upcoming Topshop spring collection will feature 120 pieces, carefully selected by John Lewis. According to Peter Ruis, Managing Director at John Lewis, Topshop will be given a prime position in stores to attract shoppers. He hopes that partnering with such an iconic brand will bring new customers to John Lewis and expects people to be excited when the new range launches. Ruis commented, 'I think the best fashion brands are multi-generational. The brilliance of Topshop is it is so affordable. ' Recently, Liberty London in Soho began selling a small Topshop collection, but the partnership with John Lewis marks the first nationwide collaboration for the brand. Topshop, which was especially popular in the 2000s and 2010s, also hopes to open some standalone stores in the future.

Topshop faced significant challenges during the covid-19 pandemic, as it was forced to close its physical stores. However, its problems began even earlier, as the brand struggled to keep up with changing shopping habits, especially among teenagers and young adults who increasingly preferred online shopping. As Topshop's core customers grew older, the brand found it difficult to attract new shoppers or adapt its products to suit the tastes of its original audience. Additionally, Topshop faced criticism for its sustainability practices, as younger shoppers became more aware of the environmental impact of fast fashion. Retail consultant Graham Soult described the partnership between John Lewis and Topshop as a smart move for both brands, noting that Topshop has a loyal customer base and John Lewis will benefit from increased attention and new shoppers. Bethan Alexander, a senior lecturer at London College of Fashion, pointed out that while the two brands have different customer bases, the partnership could be beneficial. She also warned that Topshop must recognize that high-street fashion has changed since its heyday, and today's shoppers are more conscious about their consumption and environmental impact. Topshop will need to adapt to these new expectations if it wants to succeed in its return to the High Street.
