At The Pound Arts Centre in Corsham, a new exhibition called 'Art Heals' is inviting people to learn about the real experiences of living with depression. The main artist, Nicola Davis, is from Wiltshire and is known for her honest and creative textile art. One of her most striking pieces is a large circle made from 500 empty medication blister packs, which were donated by people in the community. Nicola says this artwork is meant to show how easy it is for people to be given lots of medicine, but what they really need is more support and help from others. She believes that talking and being part of a community can be just as important as taking medicine.
Nicola's journey as an artist began when she was recovering from an eating disorder during her A-levels. She struggled with how she saw her body and was unable to go to university to study fashion. However, when she joined a charity event for the UK's eating disorder charity Beat, she painted her first picture and discovered that art helped her express her feelings and gave her a sense of purpose. Now, her art uses many different materials, such as silk, batik, collage, and embroidery. She says her work is about the inner struggles she faces, especially the many thoughts that go through her mind all the time. Some of her pieces focus on the brain and the constant activity inside it.
The exhibition also features work from the Trowbridge Service Users Group, or TSUG, a mental health support group that uses art as a form of therapy. Mark Marshall, who started the group eight years ago, says that socializing and creating art together has helped his mental health a lot. The group tries many different art projects, like candle-making, concrete art, and glass-fusing, instead of just painting. Mark believes that the most important thing is for people to feel a sense of achievement, even if their art is not perfect. He wants everyone to leave the group feeling proud of what they have made. The exhibition is open until 21 February and hopes to show visitors how art can help people deal with depression and feel better about themselves.
