Nasa has launched a daring mission to save the Swift space telescope, which is in danger of falling back to Earth. Swift is a gold-colored telescope with solar panels that has been orbiting above our planet since 2004. Its main job is to spot some of the most powerful explosions in the universe, like when giant stars die or when their remains crash into each other. These events are called gamma-ray bursts, and they release more energy in a few seconds than our Sun will in its entire lifetime. Swift is very important to scientists because it helps them study these rare and mysterious events.
Recently, Swift has been slowly falling toward Earth. This is because the Sun has been more active, which makes the Earth's atmosphere puff up and reach higher into space. As a result, Swift is getting dragged down and losing altitude. When it was first launched, Swift was 373 miles above Earth, but now it's only about 220 miles up. If it drops below 186 miles, it will be impossible to save, and it will burn up in the atmosphere. To prevent this, Nasa has sent a special rescue robot called LINK into space. LINK was built by a company called Katalyst Space Technologies in Arizona. The team had less than a year to design, build, and test LINK, which is about the size of a refrigerator and has three robotic arms, cameras, and thrusters.
The mission is risky and has never been tried before. LINK was launched on a Pegasus XL rocket and is now getting ready for its big job. Over the next few weeks, LINK will turn on its systems and check that everything is working. Then, it will try to catch up with Swift, which is also moving and changing its altitude. When LINK gets close, it will use its cameras to take pictures of Swift from all angles and figure out the best place to grab it. Swift was never designed to be caught in space, so the engineers have to be very careful. If LINK can grab Swift with its three arms, it will slowly fire its engines and lift Swift back to a higher, safer orbit. This process will take two or three months. If the mission is successful, Swift will be able to keep working and helping scientists learn more about the universe. People are already wondering if Nasa might try to save other famous telescopes in the future, like the Hubble Space Telescope.
