This is the first time since 2005 that Sunderland will host Radio 1's Big Weekend. That year, the line-up featured stars like Gwen Stefani, Foo Fighters, and the Black Eyed Peas. This year, the festival is expected to attract tens of thousands of fans, with around 100 acts performing over three days. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday will go on sale soon, costing £44. 50 per day for general admission and £106. 00 for VIP access. Local residents will have priority when tickets are released. Each person can buy up to two tickets per day, but they can only attend Friday and one weekend day, not both Saturday and Sunday. This rule is meant to give more people a chance to attend. The headliners for Sunday will be announced on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show.

Radio 1's Big Weekend is known for bringing big music events to cities that do not usually host them. Last year, the festival was held in Liverpool, where about 100,000 fans attended. The event was nicknamed 'Scouse Coachella' and featured performances by Tom Grennan, Sam Fender, Mumford & Sons, and a surprise appearance by Ed Sheeran. In previous years, the festival has traveled to places like Norwich, Swansea, Exeter, Dundee, and Londonderry, with stars such as Taylor Swift, Stormzy, The 1975, and Bruno Mars performing.
