Councils in the UK are exploring the use of artificial intelligence, commonly known as AI, to enhance their services. In West Northamptonshire, three pilot projects are currently underway. These projects focus on addressing issues related to homelessness, special educational needs, and improving customer services. Meanwhile, North Northamptonshire Council is considering a trial of AI technology to assist in taking notes during adult social care meetings. This initiative aims to save time for staff and improve the overall quality of service provided. Mike Hallam, the cabinet member for corporate services at West Northamptonshire Council, expressed his enthusiasm for AI, stating, 'I would love to make West Northants a hub for AI and educate people that it is not just a big scary project. ' He believes that AI has the potential to make a significant difference in people's lives. The new innovation hub at West Northamptonshire Council is dedicated to exploring how AI can be utilized to improve services in various areas. For instance, in the context of homelessness, the hope is that AI can help identify individuals at risk much earlier than before. In the realm of education, health, and care plans (EHCPs), AI could streamline the assessment process, ensuring that eligible children receive their assessments more efficiently. However, Hallam cautioned that AI may not be suitable for every situation. He remarked, 'In IT, we all know that not everything works all the time, so it is really important that we trial lots of projects and run with the ones that work. ' Adam Harrold, the chief executive of Humley, an AI business based in Northampton, has been collaborating with councils and housing associations across England to leverage AI technology for improving customer service. Harrold noted, 'In 90% of our deliveries, it hasn't led to any reductions in staff. instead, it shifts what people are able to do. ' He explained that rather than eliminating jobs, AI allows employees to focus on more rewarding tasks, ultimately leading to better services for the community. North Northamptonshire Council is currently testing Microsoft Co-pilot and is about to launch a pilot program for using AI to take notes in adult social care. Additionally, the council is exploring the use of AI for its website and customer service channels. Jason Smithers, the Conservative leader of the council, emphasized the importance of digital and innovative technology in enhancing productivity and services for residents and businesses. He stated, 'We have already allocated funding in our draft budget for 2025-26 to further develop innovative approaches to service delivery in the future.
