Nasa astronaut Suni Williams, who is currently aboard the International Space Station, recently took part in a spacewalk, marking her first venture outside since her arrival seven months ago. Suni and her colleague, astronaut Butch Wilmore, were initially scheduled to return to Earth following a week-long mission in June 2024. However, their return has been postponed due to a technical issue, and they now expect to be back home in late March or possibly April. Suni is a seasoned astronaut with a wealth of experience, having completed numerous spacewalks during her previous missions. On this particular spacewalk, she teamed up with astronaut Nick Hague to perform essential maintenance on the space station. Their tasks included repairing equipment that helps control the station's orientation, patching light filters on the NICER X-ray telescope, and replacing a reflector device on an international docking adapter. In addition to these tasks, the duo checked access areas and connector tools that will be utilized for future maintenance work on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a particle physics experiment module mounted on the ISS. Nasa reported that the six-hour-long spacewalk, which was the eighth of Suni's career, was successful, and they accomplished all the necessary jobs. Looking ahead, Suni is set to conduct a second spacewalk on January 23 alongside Mr. Wilmore. During this upcoming spacewalk, they will remove a radio frequency group antenna assembly, which is a collection of components designed to transmit and receive radio waves, and collect surface samples for microorganism analysis. They will also prepare a backup elbow joint for the Canadarm2 robotic arm by positioning it in the best configuration for a quick replacement if needed. Suni and Butch were originally on an eight-day mission to the ISS aboard Boeing's Starliner in June 2024. However, due to technical issues, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions, the Starliner was deemed unsafe for their return. Nasa now plans to bring them back to Earth in late March using a spacecraft built by SpaceX, a competitor of Boeing. Despite these setbacks, the astronauts have continued their important work aboard the ISS while they await a safe journey home.
