Each library is also a unique piece of art, thanks to Su Devine from Sunderland's Art Cafe, who painted each one with bold blue and turquoise wave patterns. The response from the community has been very positive. Roberta Redecke, head of business services at Sunderland BID, said that people are really enjoying the Little Libraries. She explained that the libraries are making visits to the seafront even more enjoyable and that everyone can take part. The launch of the Little Libraries is connected to a larger event: 2026 will be the National Year of Reading in the UK. This is a nationwide effort to encourage more people to discover the joy of reading. To celebrate, there will be a 'Look For the Book' treasure hunt between Roker and Seaburn on October 3. Books will be hidden along the route, and anyone who finds one can keep it. This event is designed to make reading fun and exciting, especially for families and children. The Little Libraries are already having an impact. People are stopping to browse the shelves, pick out books, and even leave their own books for others. The project is helping to give old books a new life and making reading a regular part of life by the sea. It is also a great way for visitors and locals to connect, share stories, and enjoy the outdoors. If you have a book you no longer need, you can bring it to one of the Little Libraries and leave it for someone else.
