A new art exhibition at the Streetlife Museum in Hull is celebrating the achievements of 20 remarkable women from around the world. The artist behind the exhibition, Chinwe Russell, is based in Doncaster and has created a series of bright and colorful portraits to honor these women. The exhibition includes well-known figures such as Marie Curie, who was a famous scientist and the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, and Florence Nightingale, who is remembered for her work as a nurse. However, the exhibition also highlights women whose stories are not as widely known. For example, Josephine Cochrane, who invented the dishwasher, is featured, as well as Marie Maynard Daly, the first African American woman to earn a PhD in Chemistry in the United States. Maria Montessori, who developed a new way of teaching young children, is also included.
Chinwe Russell explained that her inspiration for the exhibition came from watching a TV series about Hürrem Sultan, a woman who started life as a slave but eventually became an Ottoman queen. This story made her want to find other women who had overcome great challenges and changed their lives and the world around them. She said, 'The idea behind it is to show what women are capable of achieving around the world when given the opportunity to do so. ' The exhibition, called '20 Historical Women Who Changed the World,' has been touring the UK since 2020 and is now being shown close to Russell's home. She said it was 'very exciting' to see her work displayed in Hull and that it was 'very good' to have the collection back nearby.
The exhibition is not just about famous names. Russell wanted to make sure that women who are not as well-known also had their stories told. She believes it is important for people to learn about all kinds of women who have made a difference, whether their names are in history books or not. The portraits are painted in bright colors and show the women in strong and positive ways. Some of the paintings even show women in uniforms, such as pilots and army sergeants, to highlight the different roles women have played throughout history. The exhibition will be on display at the Streetlife Museum until Sunday, April 12. Russell hopes that visitors will leave the exhibition feeling inspired by the stories of these incredible women and will remember that women everywhere are capable of achieving great things when given the chance.
The exhibition is also a way to encourage people to think about the contributions of women in history and to recognize that there are many more stories to be told. Russell says she plans to continue making art that celebrates women and their achievements. She hopes her work will help people appreciate the impact women have had on the world and inspire future generations to follow in their footsteps. The exhibition is open to everyone, and Russell encourages people of all ages to come and learn about these extraordinary women. By sharing their stories, she hopes to show that anyone can make a difference, no matter where they come from or what challenges they face.
